How do I get to Daufuskie?
Being a true sea island, Daufuskie is only accessible by boat or ferry. Ferries currently originate from Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and from Savannah, GA. What vehicle may I drive at Melrose? Electric golf carts and electric low speed vehicles are the only form of transportation allowed on the Melrose POA roads. They also may be driven on the Island roads outside of Melrose with proper insurance and license.
Property owners may keep at their residence personal electric vehicles typically categorized as golf carts (two to six seat) or low speed electric vehicles . All vehicles must be approved by the Melrose POA.
All vehicles operated on the roads within the Melrose POA must be operated by drivers who possess a valid driver’s license. Drivers are expected to obey all posted regulations including speed limits.
All personal electric vehicles shall have a fixed or flexible windshield, headlights, taillights, brakes and vehicle identification numbers and a top speed as set by the Board of Directors.
Personal vehicles (property owners or guests) with a primary power source of a combustion engine are prohibited in any form unless specifically approved by the Board of Directors.
Vendors may drive a motor vehicle to a homeowner property in order to conduct business between the hours of 7AM and 7PM Monday through Saturday. Vendors may drive a motor vehicle to a home-owners property in order to conduct business between the hours of 9AM and 7PM on Sunday provided such business will be conducted inside and does not produce noise that would disrupt neighbors.
Is there a grocery store at Melrose? There is no grocery store at Melrose at this time. However, there is a small general store at Freeport Marina.
Who provides water and sewer facilities to property owners? Daufuskie Island Utility Company provides water and sewer. Property owners are billed quarterly.
Owners of undeveloped lots are assessed availability charges in order to ensure the financial viability of the utility company as determined by the South Carolina PUCO. Homeowners are assessed based on actual water use.
What if someone becomes ill or has an accident while on Daufuskie? Daufuskie has a full-time staff of fire fighters and EMTs. Dial 911 if you have an emergency and they will respond. Our local EMTs will assess and stabilize the patient and arrange transportation to Hilton Head or Savannah for further treatment.
What are the dining options on Daufuskie? Restaurants currently operating on the island include the Melrose Beach Club Restaurant on Melrose, the Old Daufuskie Crab Company at Freeport Marina, and Lucy Bells located on Benjes Point Road. Are church services held on Daufuskie? The First Union African Baptist Church on School Road welcomes part time residents and visitors. Services are held on Sunday morning at 9:15 for Bible Study and 10:00 for Worship. Alternately, you can take the ferry to Hilton Head Island for services at churches there.
